Can Bad Tracking Affect Meta Performance, Not Just Reporting?
Diagnostics and decisions · 3 min read · by Anna Viggeborn
Most teams treat tracking as a reporting concern. On modern ad platforms it is also an input to delivery, because the same conversion signals feed the optimisation system.
Two questions, not one
- 1. Is our reporting inaccurate?
- 2. Are the signals our advertising systems learn from incomplete or unreliable?
The first is answered by comparing platforms to your own order data. The second is answered by looking at event volume, match quality and deduplication at the source.
How weak signals reach delivery
- Fewer matched conversions means fewer examples for the optimisation model.
- Delayed server events arrive after the moment they would have been most useful.
- Duplicated events teach the system that the wrong audiences convert.
- Wrong values distort value based bidding toward the wrong products.
The practical takeaway
Fix the signal first. Only then is a campaign result a fair test of the campaign.
Not sure whether you have a performance problem or a signal problem?
Your performance may be fine. Your signals aren't.
