Why Did My ROAS Suddenly Drop? A Diagnostic Checklist
Diagnostics and decisions · 4 min read · by Anna Viggeborn
A sharp ROAS drop has three possible explanations: you sold less, you measured less, or the market changed. They look identical in the dashboard and they need opposite responses.
Start with the business number
Open your own order data for the same period. If orders and revenue held steady while reported ROAS fell, this is a measurement event, not a performance event.
The checklist
1. Did total orders in your own system change?
2. Is the Purchase event still firing?
3. Did Event Match Quality change?
4. Did browser or server event volume shift?
5. Did consent settings or a banner change?
6. Does GA4 show the same decline?
Reading the answers
- Orders flat, Meta down, GA4 flat: almost certainly a Meta signal problem.
- Orders flat, both platforms down: a site wide tracking or consent change.
- Orders down, both platforms down: a real performance or demand change.
- Orders up, reported conversions up more: duplication.
Before you act
Moving budget on a measurement artefact turns a tracking bug into a revenue loss.
Not sure whether you have a performance problem or a signal problem?
Your performance may be fine. Your signals aren't.
