GA4 Purchase Event Not Firing: A Step by Step Check

GA4 and GTM · 4 min read · by Anna Viggeborn

A missing GA4 purchase event is usually one of three things: the data layer never pushes it, the tag never triggers on it, or the event arrives without the fields GA4 needs to treat it as a purchase.

Check in this order

1. GA4 DebugView with a real test order
2. Does an event named purchase arrive?
3. Does it carry transaction_id, value and currency?
4. In GTM Preview: does the purchase trigger fire?
5. Does the data layer push happen before the tag fires?
6. Is the measurement ID on the confirmation page correct?

Common causes

  • The data layer push happens after the tag container loads, so the trigger never sees it.
  • The event is named differently, for example transaction or Purchase with a capital letter.
  • currency or value is missing, so revenue reports stay empty even though the event exists.
  • Consent mode denies analytics storage and no consent is given on the confirmation page.
  • A single page checkout never triggers a page view for the confirmation step.

What it means for decisions

Without purchase events, GA4 cannot tell you which channel produced revenue. Any channel comparison you make in that period is a comparison of sessions, not of outcomes.
