GA4 Revenue Not Matching Shopify: Why the Numbers Differ
GA4 and GTM · 4 min read · by Anna Viggeborn
Your ecommerce platform is the source of truth for revenue. GA4 is a measurement system that sees only what reaches it from the browser. They will never match exactly. The question is how far apart they should be.
Expected differences
- Tax and shipping included in one and not the other.
- Refunds and cancellations recorded in the platform but not sent to GA4.
- Manual, phone or POS orders that never pass through the website.
- Consent denied traffic that sends no analytics event.
- Currency conversion applied differently.
- Timezone differences pushing orders into another day.
Signs of a real problem
- GA4 reports higher revenue than the platform. That means duplication.
- The gap widened suddenly after a site, theme or tag release.
- The gap is concentrated on one device, browser or payment method.
- Transaction counts match but revenue does not, which points to a value field problem.
A practical tolerance
Track the gap as a percentage every week. The trend tells you more than the absolute number.
